Rope type — how to choose?
Tricia GaucherMacrame is so much more than just knots! Choosing the right cord is essential to giving each creation its unique style, texture, and durability . If you're a beginner or want to learn more about the different types of cord, this article is for you!
In the world of macrame, cotton rope is the most common, but not all ropes are created equal! Other interesting materials exist, but here we'll focus on natural fibers. From recycled cotton and OEKO-TEX certified ropes to different textures, each type of rope has its own specific characteristics that influence the final look of your project. Let's explore the three main categories of rope used in macrame, as well as their various dimensions.
1. The brushed rope
Also called " single strand," this rope is made of multiple cotton microfibers woven together into a single cord. It is highly valued for its elegant look and softness.
- Perfect for: all types of macrame, but especially for feathers and pompoms, as it brushes easily.
- Advantages: gives a fluid and refined effect to creations, ideal for large wall hangings.
- Disadvantages: more delicate, it tends to pill more easily on frequently handled accessories.
2. The twisted rope
It's a rope made of 3 to 4 strands twisted together, each strand being made of cotton microfibers. It adds a beautiful texture to creations and is particularly strong.
- Perfect for: planters, wall hangings and pieces requiring structure.
- Advantages: very resistant, brings a natural twisted effect and character to your creations.
- Disadvantages: less suitable for feathers, as you have to undo the twists one by one before brushing.
3. The braided rope
Here, the microfibers are braided together into a tube, with microfibers in the center. It's a versatile rope that I particularly appreciate for allowing for increasingly refined details in patterns.
- Perfect for: keychains, accessories, and fine details in wall hangings.
- Advantages: very resistant to friction, leaves almost no lint or very little.
- Disadvantages: it is more fragile under high tension and cannot be brushed, except with infinite patience!

The dimensions of the ropes
The diameter of a rope affects the final look of your project. Here's a guide to sizes and their uses:
- 1mm and less : intended for micro-macrame (jewelry, small details). Most often made of polyester or waxed polyester cord.
- 1.5mm : perfect for small, delicate accessories and bracelets.
- 3mm - 4mm : mainly used for planters, wall decorations, their ornaments, a wide variety of accessories and keychains.
- 5mm : perfect for planters, wall decorations, straps and other pieces requiring more strength.
- 9mm and above : used for large and structured creations.
💡 Warning! A 3mm product from one brand may differ from a 3mm product from another brand. Always check before starting a project.
